You want the perfect dress for ballroom dancing. Here are some of the tips to help you in buying the right dress.

One form of ballroom dancing is modern fast paced dancing. For this form of dancing, the ballroom dancing dresses usually worn are of lightweight material and have short sleeves or halter open sleeves. It is not advisable that you buy dresses without straps for this dance as the upper part of the dress can drop.

Latin dance is another form of ballroom dancing. This is a very fast moving ballroom dancing with lot of leg work. So the ballroom dancing dresses for this dance is very short and is designed to show the legs of the dancer and help in more ease of movement.

For ballroom dancing, wear ballroom dancing dresses that are well fitted and that go well with the form of dancing that is taking place.

You need to practice sometimes wearing your performance shoes so that they stretch and fit your foot. However, for regular practice, you require practice shoes.
There are many types and designs of ladies’ practice shoes. These include soft leather Oxford like standard dance shoe worn by men; dance sneaker for ladies sporting suede soles or a low heel pump or sandal.
Some men prefer to wear their old standard dance shoes for practice, while others wear dance sneakers. As these sneakers feature a very high arch as compared to most shoes, it is advised that men choose their dance sneaker two sizes bigger than their normal shoe size.

There are two types of ballroom performance dance shoes. These are Latin and Standard shoes.

Latin Dance shoes typically worn by women for Tango, Salsa and Samba dance are open toed high heel sandals, heel is around 2-3”. It should be well- fitted so that your toes touch the very end of the shoe and the sole is not noticeable.

Men generally wear a black tie shoe made of leather porting a Cuban design heel. The height of heel is about 1-1/2″.

Standard Dance Shoes are also known as smooth dance shoes. Women’s standard shoes are closed toe high heel pumps. Theses shoes are often created from satin and the color either matched the shade of the ball gown or it is flesh toned so that your leg looks more graceful.  The heel of standard dance shoes should be more centred in contrast to Latin shoes to assist the backward movement of Viennese Waltz and other similar dances.

Select a black tuxedo made of worsted wool with trousers that have pleats in the front. Go for a black waistcoat, black tie and cummerbund. You can leave out waistcoat and cummerbund, if you decide to wear double-breasted coat. The tie and cummerbund are created from marcella. Complete the dress by including satin suspenders or braces to hold the trouser up.

Shorten the sleeves to the correct length of your arms so that it does not pick out of your coat sleeves while you raise your arms during dancing. Cuffs fixed by cufflinks are suggested for waltz dance costume.

Wear dance shoes with leather soles. If you are unable to find shoes that fit you, you can take the help of a shoe repair shop and alter a pair of normal formal shoes into dance shoes.

Wear formal white gloves with your tail coat. Cotton gloves are enough and they are less slippery than nylon.

Choose ballroom dresses for waltz dance that are comfortable and provide flexibility for dance movements.

Women dress in full-skirted formal gown of angle length. These dresses are created from materials like taffeta or satin. You can look for formal gowns at dance wear stores and departmental stores.

If you decide to dress in a period gown, go for a well tailored hoop skirt. Ensure that the hopes do not hinder the dance movements.

If you decide to dress in a gown with a train, hold the train up while dancing. The train should include a loop in the hem to assist you in keeping it up during performance.

Wear gloves with your gown that are long enough to reach above your elbows.

If you have long hair, fix a bun or chignon. If you keep your long hair down, it can fly into somebody’s eyes when you rotate.

Opt for low heel shoes or flats for waltz ballroom dance.

You can find inexpensive Latin dance attires in popular junior stores. Search for cocktail and clubbing outfits of stretchable material or separates that can be joined together to make ballroom dance costumes.

You can also consider different designs like handkerchief hemlines, asymmetrical necklines and flared skirts; they look wonderful while moving during dancing. Wear dance briefs or leotard under these dresses for modesty.

If you want to decorate ballroom dresses bought from the store, collect beads, ribbon, Swarovski crystals, feathers or lace from the local sewing or craft shop and with the help of needle and thread, stick these embellishments on the hem, sleeve or neck of the dresses for an added enhancement.

For tango ballroom dance, look for ballroom dresses that look stunning on you and also are comfortable and give enough room for dancing movements.

Tango is a passionate dance; keep this in mind while selecting dance costumes. Modern tango dresses come in all lengths from long shirts with slits to very short skirts and dresses. These outfits normally include asymmetrical hemlines and are decorated with fringes and crochet designs. These clothes are prepared from new fabric such as lycras and other stretch material that provide a comfortable fitting and at the same time, an elegant look. Women also wear fishnet stockings.

Tango dance shoes are an essential part of Tango dance costume. Women usually adorn their hair with flowers created from fabric or feathers.

Men usually wear silk shirt or of similar fabric and straight cut trousers with dance shoes. Some accessories that can match this outfit are vests, hats and suspenders.

Many participants decide not to wear dance costume for ballroom contests. Some couples wear party wear or evening gown at contests.  

However, this may not be a good choice because these clothes are not very comfortable. Usually party clothes or evening dresses are created from non-stretchable material that is not appropriate for ballroom dancing. The ballroom dresses for contests are exclusively designed to display the dance movements and postures in the best possible way. The usual party wear will just not have the same impact.

Practice dresses are less decorative and expensive than performance ballroom dresses. Gowns are seldom worn for practising ballroom dancing. The practice attire for women usually includes practice pants and a showy top. Though, skirts and dresses are also used as practice clothes for ballroom dancing. Skirts are usually of knee length are a good dance wear for samba and tango ballroom dancing.  .

You will also require upper body wear for practicing. A plain black color leotard, particularly the piece with a strappy back, is always a good choice, and very cost-effective. You can wear shirts with your practice pants or skirt if you so wish or you can go for a plain cut and an asymmetrical upper body wear if it is more to your liking.
